An automatic driveway gate can weigh several hundred pounds and moves under power, which makes it one of the most potentially dangerous devices on a residential property. That is why the safety standard known as UL 325 exists — and why every gate we install or service is audited against it. Here is what it covers and the devices that make it work.
What Is UL 325?
UL 325 is the safety standard for powered gate operators in the United States. It requires that automatic gates include at least two independent forms of entrapment protection so the gate cannot crush or trap a person, pet, or vehicle. Alongside it, ASTM F2200 governs the physical construction of the gate itself. Compliance isn't optional — it is the baseline for a safe, insurable installation.
Photo-Eye Sensors (Photocells)
Photo eyes are the most familiar safety device. A pair of sensors sends an infrared beam across the gate's path; if anything breaks the beam while the gate is closing, the gate stops and reverses:
- They are the reason a gate won't close on a car sitting in the driveway.
- Misalignment, dirty lenses, or a knocked sensor are the most common causes of a gate that won't close.
Safety Edges
A safety edge is a pressure-sensitive strip mounted on the leading edge of the gate. If the gate contacts an object — a child, a bumper, a pet — the edge senses the pressure and immediately reverses:
- Where photo eyes protect the open path, safety edges protect against direct contact.
- They are especially important on gates with pinch points near posts or walls.
Loop Detectors
Loop detectors are wire loops embedded in the driveway that sense a vehicle by its metal mass:
- Exit loops open the gate automatically as a car approaches from the inside.
- Safety (shadow) loops hold the gate open while a vehicle is underneath it, preventing it from closing on the car.
Why This Matters for Your Home
Safety devices drift out of alignment and fail over time — and a gate with a dead photo eye or a worn safety edge is both a liability and a code violation.
